As a bilingual organization of 101 employees spread across southern and northern California, over 50% of the SCL team is Spanish speaking – a representation of California’s continuously changing demographic. According to the 2014 US Census, the Latino population of California was the largest in the Nation at 14.99 million people, and is the fastest growing demographic across California and the US. Controller and head of accounting for SCL, Maribel Mendez, has been with the company for 10 years and now manages a team of 12 personnel in her department – 8 of which are bilingual. “My team is responsible for all of the numbers at SCL, which entails a lot, and being fluent in Spanish comes in handy every single day when dealing with customers and employees.” From the warehouse to transportation, sales reps, accounting and upper management, SCL is bilingual across all departments and locations. “We try to be conscious and accommodating to other people and being bilingual is a necessary part of conducting business in California. Depending on the customer or employee, if speaking Spanish is more comfortable for them, we speak in Spanish. It’s all about accommodation. We do our best to engage with others to understand and accommodate their needs, and culturally we may be different, but we have to be able to get along and communicate.”
